Hello, my name is Mrs O'Neill.

I am the Year 4 teacher on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

I am one of the Assistant Head Teachers.

I love being a  Teacher.  In my spare time I enjoy days out with my family.

Hello, my name is Mrs Payton.

I have been connected to our school since 1990 when my eldest son started school.  Two years later my other son started school too! At that point, I volunteered to help out.

Shortly after that, I trained to be a Teaching Assistant and have been one ever since. I love my job, working as a TA in Year 4.

When I am not in school, I love spending time with my family.

Hello, my name is Mrs Strain.

I am the Year 4 teacher on Wednesday (my favourite day of the week, just in case you didn't know).

I am also the SENDco, this is a different type of job that means I get to work with children in every class and work closely with their families.

Out of school, I am a mum of three teenagers.  We enjoy caravanning but I dream of exotic holidays and world cruises.

Sanctions

  • You will be reminded of our class rules.

  • You will be warned and asked to make the right choice.

If poor conduct continues you will receive time in where you​ may:

  • Repeat or complete unsatisfactory work

  • Write a letter of apology

  • Write out the school rules

We will record your behaviour​ on CPOMS

  • We may inform your parents so that they can support

you to make the right choices​

  • We will always support you to make the right choices.

In Year 4, we use Power Maths as a basis of our maths lesson. This is an exciting class mastery approach, which has been recommended by the DfE, that works for every child.  It is based upon the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. 

Every lesson is divided into sections that involve plenty of discovery, sharing, collaboration, practice and reflection. Children are encouraged to solve problems each day through the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract thinking.  

At the heart of this programme is the idea that all children can achieve and be successful mathematicians with the right growth mindset.  It promotes five child friendly characters, each with their own positive skillset, to inspire and motivate children.  These characters are:

For writing this year we will continue to use the Literacy Company's Pathways to write Scheme.

Pathways to write is a proven methodology built around units of work which develop vocabulary, reading and writing skills through the mastery approach.  The units are linked to high quality texts which means lessons are engaging and purposeful.

Spelling Punctuation and Grammar

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar

In Year 4 children will learn how to use:

  • Fronted adverbials

  • Paragraphs

  • Appropriate choice of pronoun or noun across sentences to avoid repetition

  • Inverted commas and other punctuation to mark direct speech

  • Apostrophes to mark singular and plural possession

Spellings are taken from the Year 3 and 4 statutory spelling lists and are a mixture of words pupils frequently use in their writing and those that they often misspell.  We will also explore the origins of some spellings.

Children are encouraged to practice the Letter-join style of handwriting.

A Pen Licence is given to children who can consistently demonstrate a fluent, cursive style of writing.

Learning Project 'Discover, Explore, Create' Romans

What did the Romans do for Britain?

During Autumn Term we will be learning a lot about the Romans.  In Geography we will locate the city of Rome on a map of Europe and learn how, where and why the Romans invaded Britain.  We will learn about the city of Chester, a local city that was started by the Romans.  We will learn how Roman life is evident in the human geography of Britain today.

In History we will learn about the key events that took place between 55-BC when Caesar failed to conquer Britain and 410-AD when the Romans withdrew from Britain.

In Art we will be story telling through art and we will focus on the story of Boudica.  We will also be exploring, how we can use colour line and shape to create patterns, including repeating patterns.

Science

Electricity

  • Identify common appliances that run on electricity

  • Construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers

  • Identify whether a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery

  • Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether a lamp lights in a simple series circuit

  • Recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.

Sound

  • Identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating

  • Recognise that vibrations from a sound travel through a medium to the ear.

  • Find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it

  • Find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it.

  • Recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.

States of Matter

  • Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases

  • Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)

  • Identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperature.

Living things and their habitats

  • Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways 

  • Explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment 

  • Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things

Food and Digestion

  • Describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans

  • Construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey.

Independent learners.....

  • Visit the library to find out more about the science topic being covered or look for information on the Internet

  •  Visit parks and woodlands and look at habitats of squirrels, birds, rabbits etc.

  •  Discuss the effects of electricity in lights, computer etc. and emphasise the safety aspects – no fingers in sockets, no wet hands.
